Chicago isn’t going to implement a commuter tax. Raising the subject is good electoral politics by Daley and nothing more. However, the discussion it stirs could be healthy as the region moves on to tackle transit and infrastructure challenges.
A new freshman class of lawmakers from the Chicago suburbs took their seats in Springfield yesterday. Among them was one Democrat, Anne Stava-Murray, who refused to vote to re-elect Madigan as House Speaker. The Daily Herald today featured summaries of their ambitions for the session.
Local CCL members scored a promising victory last fall. After a long campaign to get a climate change resolution on the ballot, voters in York and Lyons Townships both approved the resolution by more than 3/4 margin.
Stava-Murray rode last fall's blue wave to a surprise win in the solidly Republican south-central DuPage 81st District, spending only $30,000 in the effort. Key to her success in this traditionally red suburb around Downers Grove was her vocal opposition to Madigan.
DuPage County has some Democrats in it.
